How do I apply for Dutch childcare benefit from outside the Netherlands?

You can apply for childcare benefit from outside the Netherlands using the Tax Administration’s Mijn toeslagen portal. You will need a DigiD for this. You can also call the tax information line for non-residents.

Attention:

You must apply for childcare benefit within 3 months of when your child starts attending childcare to ensure you receive the full benefit to which you are entitled. If you apply later, you will only receive childcare benefit for the previous 3 months.

Applying for childcare benefit

  1. Check whether you are entitled to childcare benefit.
  2. Have your income details close at hand.
  3. Have the contract and an invoice from the childcare centre close at hand.
  4. Log in to Mijn toeslagen (information in Dutch) with your DigiD.
  5. Click on ‘apply’ (aanvragen) next to ‘childcare benefit’ (kinderopvangtoeslag).
  6. Complete the forms, click ‘agree’ (akkoord) and send.

You will need a DigiD to log in. If you don’t already have a DigiD, find out how to apply for a DigiD from abroad.

You’ll receive a message regarding your application within 5 weeks in your MijnOverheid Message Box, in Mijn toeslagen and by post.

If you don’t have a DigiD, you can apply for childcare benefit by phone.

  1. Check whether you are entitled to childcare benefit.
  2. Call the tax information line for non-residents. Say that you would like to apply for childcare benefit.
  3. The Tax Administration will then send you an application form by post.
  4. Complete the form and return it.

You will be informed by post of the decision on your application.
