What is a birth certificate?
A birth certificate is written proof that you have registered the birth of your child. In most countries you receive your child’s birth certificate when you register their birth.
When is a birth certificate required?
You need your child’s birth certificate to apply for a Dutch passport or Dutch ID card for them.

What information is on a birth certificate?
A birth certificate usually includes the following information:
- Given name(s) and surname(s), which may sometimes be a chain of names
- Date of birth
- Time of birth, if known
- Place of birth
- Sex
- Name(s) of parent(s)
