Do I get time off if I become a parent outside the Netherlands?

Even if you live and work abroad, you may be entitled to maternity leave, partner leave or parental leave under Dutch social insurance law. This depends on where you are insured for social insurance benefits.

Insured in the Netherlands

If you become a parent abroad and are insured under the Dutch social security scheme, you are entitled to leave under Dutch social insurance law.

This is the case, for example, if you are on secondment from a Dutch employer or if you are a Dutch civil servant posted abroad. 

You may be entitled to the following types of leave:

Not insured in the Netherlands

If you are not insured under the Dutch social security scheme, you are not entitled to leave under Dutch social insurance law. You may, however, be entitled to leave under the rules and regulations of the country where you live. Find out more about this from your employer or the local authorities.
