What happens if I change my name from outside the Netherlands?

If you officially change your name outside the Netherlands and the name change is recognised in the Netherlands, you will need to take follow-up action. For instance, you will need to inform various organisations of the change.

If you change your name outside the Netherlands and your name change is recognised in the Netherlands, you will have to report this to various government organisations as well as your bank and insurance company, for example. You will also need to apply for a new passport, ID card and/or driving licence. It is also a good idea to have your personal information updated in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI).

You are responsible for having your birth certificate changed to show your new name. To do this, contact the authorities in the country where you live.

If you change your name outside the Netherlands and you want your new name to be recognised in the Netherlands, your birth certificate must be registered in the Register of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Registered Partnerships at the municipality of The Hague.

To do this, contact the Foreign Documents Department via the municipality's website.

If you live abroad and you change your name on your Dutch passport/ID card, you should inform the Non-residents Records Database (RNI) of the change. Please note that you can only do this in person at an RNI desk in the Netherlands. The RNI will report the change to all Dutch government organisations, such as the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) and the Tax Administration.
