My passport or ID card has been lost or stolen in Switzerland. What should I do?

If your passport or ID card has been lost or stolen in Switzerland, what you can do depends on where you’re travelling to and how you’re getting there.

What is your situation?

Information: As of 16 September 2024, there may be border controls at the German border. If you are travelling to or through Germany, make sure that you have a valid form of ID with you. A Dutch driving licence is not considered an official form of ID in Germany.

I am travelling by plane, train, bus or boat

If you are travelling by plane, train, bus or boat, ask the company you are travelling with whether you can travel on a replacement document. And find out what documents you need for that. A replacement document could be a valid ticket together with a photocopy of your passport or ID card, for example. If you cannot travel on a replacement document, you will need an emergency travel document.

What else should you do?

The Dutch government does not require you to report your passport or ID card as lost or stolen to the local police, but you are advised to do so. If you report a loss or theft, ask the police for written proof that you have filed a report. You may need this for insurance purposes.

If your ID card has been lost or stolen, and it was issued after 4 January 2021, it can be used to log in with DigiD. So it is important to block the login feature. Contact the DigiD helpdesk to do this.
