Where can I apply for a Dutch passport of ID-card, if I live outside the Netherlands

You can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card in the Netherlands or abroad. In the Netherlands you can apply at a border municipality or at airport Schiphol. Outside the Netherlands you can apply at a Dutch embassy or at a application centre of VFS Global.

Netherlands

If you live outside the Netherlands and will be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands. You can do this at a border municipality or at airport Schiphol.

A Dutch border municipality is a municipality that, in most cases, is situated on a border with another country. You can apply to one of these municipalities for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands.

Abroad

If you live outside the Netherlands and will not be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card from abroad. You can apply from abroad via a Dutch embassy or consulate-general. Or you can apply at a application location of VFS Global.

Check whether you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card in a neighbouring country. Or apply whenever you visit the Netherlands. 

VFS Global is an external service provider that processes applications for passports and ID-cards. VFS Global works for the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs. VFS Global has locations in multiple countries, such as the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States.
