Language selection:English

You can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card abroad. You can also apply for a passport or ID card in the Netherlands.

If you live outside the Netherlands and will not be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card from abroad. You can apply from abroad via:

  • A Dutch embassy or consulate-general.
  • A VFS Global application location. VFS Global is an external service provider that processes applications for passports and ID-cards.

To find out exactly what you have to do, follow the step-by-step guide: Applying for a Dutch passport or ID-card abroad. Fill in the country where you live. The plan will then explain how and where to apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card.

Attention: Is there no Dutch embassy or consulate-general in the country where you live? And is there no VFS Global location either? Or is there no location close to you? Check whether you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card in a neighbouring country. Or apply whenever you visit the Netherlands.

If you live outside the Netherlands and will be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands. You can do this at the following locations:

  • A Dutch border municipality. A Dutch border municipality is a municipality that, in most cases, is situated on a border with another country. You can apply to one of these municipalities for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands.
  • At Schiphol. You can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card at Schiphol airport. This application location is part of Haarlemmermeer municipality.
Attention: If you are not visiting the Netherlands soon, check if you can apply in the country where you live. Or in a neighbouring country.
