What will be the amount of my sickness benefit outside the Netherlands?

The amount and duration of sickness benefit varies by country. How much sickness benefit you receive outside of the Netherlands and for how long depends on the country where you apply for it.

Check where you should apply for sickness benefit

If you don’t know whether you are entitled to sickness benefit from the Netherlands or another country, first check where you should apply for sickness benefit.

What is your situation?

If you are entitled to sickness benefit from the benefits organisation in the country where you work, find out the amount and duration of your sickness benefit from that organisation.

If you work in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you can find the relevant benefits organisation on Europa.eu.

If you are entitled to sickness benefit from UWV, the benefit will usually be 70% of your daily pay per day. Your daily pay is the average salary you received per day from the employer you worked for when you became ill. The exact amount of your sickness benefit will depend on your situation.

Estimate your gross sickness benefit using UWV’s calculation tool (information in Dutch). To calculate your estimated benefit you will need your daily pay. You will find this in the letter from UWV on the decision regarding your sickness benefit, sent in Mijn UWV and by post.

Attention: The amount of sickness benefit you receive may change if your situation changes. For example, if you start working part time. Find out what changes you need to report, and how.

Sickness benefit duration

You can receive sickness benefit from UWV for up to 2 years. The benefit may also stop earlier.

If you have been ill for more than 2 years, see if you are entitled to benefits abroad under the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (WIA). This provides an income to people who are unable to work (either full time or part time) due to medical reasons.
