I live abroad. How can I repay my student loans to DUO?

How you can repay your student loans to DUO from abroad depends on the country where you live.

Attention: If you live in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten or Saba, there is also another way for you to repay your DUO student loans. Find out more about repaying a student loan from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

What is your situation?

Do you live in an EU country or the United Kingdom? Or in another country in SEPA (this includes all EU countries plus the United Kingdom, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Mayotte, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man)? In that case, you can repay your student loans by direct debit or by transferring the money yourself.

Direct debit

You can repay your student loans by direct debit. You need to have an account with a bank in the country where you live, which supports Dutch direct debits. Ask your bank about this.

Apply for a direct debit in Mijn DUO. To log in, you will need your DigiD or an EU-recognised eID.

Transferring the money yourself

You can also repay your loans by international bank transfer. You have to pay in euros. You can pay in either monthly or annual instalments.

  • If you want to pay in monthly instalments, you will receive a payment request each month.
  • If you want to pay in annual instalments, you first have to apply to DUO to do this. You will then pay all your monthly instalments at once at the end of the year. This could reduce your extra bank fees. You will receive a payment request in October. You must make the repayment by 31 December.

Attention: If you transfer money from abroad, it can sometimes take a while before DUO receives it. So make sure you pay on time.
