How do I apply for surviving dependants’ benefit outside the Netherlands?

If you live outside the Netherlands, the organisation you apply to for surviving dependants’ benefit depends on where you live. The Social Insurance Bank (SVB) will pay your benefit.

If you live in an EU country or Switzerland, you can apply for surviving dependants’ benefit from the organisation responsible for social security in:

  • the country where you live, or
  • the country where the deceased person was last insured.

If you are not sure where to apply, contact the SVB.

If you live in Spain you can contact the SVB office at the Dutch embassy.

If you live in a country with which the Netherlands has a reciprocal agreement or Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland, find out in which country the deceased person was last insured. You can apply for surviving dependants’ benefit from the organisation responsible for social security in that country.

If you are not sure where to apply, contact the SVB.

If you live in Türkiye, Morocco, Suriname or South Africa you can contact the SVB office at the Dutch embassy.

If you do not live in an EU country, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, or a country with which the Netherlands has a reciprocal agreement, contact the SVB to discuss your personal situation.
