Applying for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands in Denmark

You don’t need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands if you live in Denmark. If you live outside Denmark, or if your current Danish residence permit will expire soon, find out what to do.

You don’t need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands if:

  1. you are an Danish national
  2. you live in Denmark and have a valid Danish residence permit
  3. you are in Denmark and already have a valid Schengen visa

If your Danish residence permit will not be extended, you can remain in the Netherlands and the other Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days after your residence permit expires. In some cases you will need a Schengen visa. This depends on your nationality.

What you can do depends on your situation.

Lost or stolen

If you are in Denmark and your Dutch resident permit has been lost or stolen, you may need an entry visa to return to the Netherlands.

If your Dutch residence permit has expired and you have applied for an extension from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), or are planning to do so, you may need an entry visa to return to the Netherlands.

I live in a different country

If you are in Denmark and need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands for one of the following situations, you can apply for this visa at the embassy of Luxembourg in Copenhagen:

  • You didn’t need a visa for Denmark but do need one for the Netherlands. You have to travel to the Netherlands on short notice and didn’t know this when you travelled to Denmark.
  • Your Schengen visa has expired or almost expired but you must urgently travel to the Netherlands, for example for medical reasons or following the death of a family member.
