Renewing a Dutch passport or ID card from abroad
If you live outside the Netherlands and your Dutch passport or ID card is about to expire, you cannot travel without a valid passport or ID card. You will need to apply for a new passport or ID card. You need to follow the same steps if you renew a passport or ID card for yourself or for your child. The procedure is the same.
Get it done
Aged 18 or over (adult)
If you are aged 18 or older and have Dutch nationality you can renew your passport or ID card. Follow the step-by-step plan to see how to do this: applying for or renewing a passport or ID card.
Younger than 18 (child)
If your child has Dutch nationality, you can renew their passport or ID card on their behalf. Your child can also renew it themselves, depending on their age.
If your child is under 12, you can renew their passport or ID card on their behalf. Follow the step-by-step plan to see how to do this: applying for or renewing a passport or ID card.
Please note: you will need to come to the application location together with your child to submit the application. If you or the other parent cannot be present, the parent who is not present will need to sign a permission form.
If your child is 12 or older they can renew their ID card themselves. The same applies for a passport if you (and their other parent) have given permission. From the age of 18, your child can renew their passport themselves without parental permission.
Follow the step-by-step plan: renewing a passport or ID card. Your child will need to follow the same plan if they wish to submit the application themselves.
