How to file a tax return

If you lived outside the Netherlands for the entire year for which you want to file a tax return, you can file the return online (information in Dutch).

There are several ways to log in:

  • with the DigiD app or DigiD with SMS verification. You can no longer log in with the Tax Administration using DigiD with username and password only. If you do not have a DigiD or if you need to re-apply for a DigiD, find out how to apply for a DigiD abroad.

  • with an EU-approved login key.
  • with the username and password the Tax Administration sent you. This way of logging in is possible until 1 Jul 2023. You can no longer request a username and password from the Tax Administration.

If you log in with your DigiD or a European eIDAS, you can do more than just file your tax return. You can, for instance, also review previous tax returns and assessments and inform the Tax Administration of your bank account number.

If you log in with a username and password you can only file a tax return.

Attention:

Rest assured, the padlock in your address bar or in the bottom right of your browser shows you that Mijn Belastingdienst is a secure environment.
